PEF Gives Technology Boost to High School Reading

Opportunity:

Joanna Kotowski, reading teacher at PRHS, identified a computer-based program, called Lexia, which could help students in her reading program.

Solution:

Kotowski received a $2,700 grant from the PEF to procure Lexia. Lexia provides personalized learning for students on foundational reading skills, and provides teachers with analyses of student abilities that can be used to identify areas of focus for teachers and students. This approach to reading has proven to accelerate reading skills development, predicts students' year-end performance, and provides teachers data-driven action plans to help differentiate instruction.

Results:

Kotowski has integrated Lexia into her curriculum and the results have been immediate. “Lexia has been a great complement to our reading-instruction programs – it’s making a big difference for the students in the reading program,” Kotowski said.
