New iPads Accelerate Literacy in Bagnall Kindergarten
Opportunity:
The kindergarten team at the Bagnall School identified an opportunity to improve literacy instruction in the kindergarten classrooms through the use of technology. They applied for a grant through the PEF to obtain iPad minis.
Solution:
The PEF issued a $2,500 grant to the Kindergarten team for the purchase of six iPad minis, headphones, cases, and apps. The kindergarten team is using the iPads in its literacy centers and for small group instruction.
Results:
The iPads have increased students’ level of engagement and their comfort with technology. “We observed a high level of collaboration, independence and improvement of communication skills,” said Shannon Campbell, Bagnall kindergarten teacher. “The iPads have supported lessons in speaking and listening, retelling, rhyming, letter identification, letter-sound association, reading fluency and sight word association.”
